FAQs

What is the typical power usage for AI data centres?
AI and high-performance compute (HPC) data centres typically operate at power densities between 30 kW and 80 kW per rack, with overall site demand ranging from 1 MW to 50 MW+ depending on the scale of deployment. At JLM Energy, we design scalable power infrastructure that supports both edge compute clusters and full hyperscale developments, ensuring optimal efficiency and power utilisation across all phases of expansion.
How long does it take to build a modular data centre?
Timelines depend on capacity and location, but most modular or containerised data centres can be deployed within 16 – 24 weeks from design approval to commissioning. Our approach integrates parallel construction and factory pre-fabrication, allowing on-site works, electrical installation, and testing to progress simultaneously. Larger, purpose-built facilities typically take 6 – 12 months to complete.
How do you integrate renewables and battery systems with the grid?
JLM Energy provides full renewable-plus-storage integration using a combination of solar PV arrays, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and grid interconnection design. We handle DNO or utility approvals, grid protection coordination, and hybrid control logic to ensure a stable, resilient power supply. The result is a balanced system that reduces grid dependency, lowers operating costs, and supports net-zero targets.
What uptime or SLAs do you guarantee?
Our data-centre power designs are built around Tier III and Tier IV principles, ensuring 99.982 – 99.995 % uptime. We specify N+1 or 2N redundancy on critical systems including power, cooling, and backup supply. Tailored SLAs can be structured around client needs, covering planned maintenance, fault response, and remote monitoring through our engineering support network.
What is the typical cost per kWₜ (CapEx) for design-build?
Capital costs vary based on specification, redundancy level, and location. As a general guide: Modular / containerised AI compute facilities: from £6,000 – £9,000 per kWₜ Purpose-built Tier III – IV facilities: from £9,000 – £14,000 per kWₜ JLM’s integrated EPC model helps reduce CapEx through in-house design, renewable integration, and localised construction management—delivering high-performance infrastructure at competitive cost.
